You should choose the first option for a couple of reasons. First, most courses build upon themselves, so if you learn the material at the beginning of the semester very well, you will build an excellent foundation for the rest of the semester. Second, if you work hard at the beginning of the semester and do well on the first couple of exams, it takes a lot of pressure off for finals. So what does this mean? Well, my advice is to go above and beyond for about the first third of the semester for classes that you think will cause you difficulty. That means going to lots of office hours, reading your textbook diligently (especially if it's a good textbook), spending lots of time thinking about your problem sets, and taking advantage of pretty much any other academic resource you can find (PLTL, tutoring, etc.). Go all out - you probably won't have to work this hard for the whole semester! Then, for the last two thirds, don't slack off, but reduce your effort to a more appropriate level. After building this foundation and getting a few good grades under your belt, you may be surprised by how much stress you will be able to avoid in the end! |
